I love stories. I love how people can string a whole bunch of words together that captivate me in such a way that I feel lost without them. When a brilliant story comes to an end, I feel a sense of longing that nothing but time can take from me.
I want to make other people feel that way.
In 10 short days, I will be starting my last semester of undergraduate education. And I wanted to go out with a bang.
There is a 300-level course in the English department called "Creative Writing: Fiction Novel." And I am taking that in this semester. I want my story to be told, and I finally have the place to do it. We have to read a novel during the first month of classes to sort of prepare us for what we have to do. I just finished it. It's called The Hunger Games. And I'm aching inside because of the ending.
The story I'm going to write is a love story. But clearly, not a traditional love story. Because that would be overdone, and just not me. I have a vague outline in my mind. I know where I want the story to go. But I can already feel the pain that is going to be caused when I let other people read it. Because the girl I'll be writing will be me.
Honestly, I always write me. I don't always do it in the same way, but it's always me. And whether I write a boy or a girl, it's still me. Clichéd as it sounds, a person writes what she knows. And I only know how I feel, and how I think, and how I react. My downfall as a writer is that I don't understand many people. And it's very difficult to write what you don't understand.
So I will do some research. I know who I will need to talk to in order to get the information I need. I will need to talk to him, because I'll be writing him too. After the semester I went through, how could I not? He's all I know. I only hope that he will come alive on the page, so that people will be able to understand why I can't seem to get over him. Why he keeps calling me back. Why the littlest thing he does makes me question everything. Why I love him more than anything in the world. Why I wish the story in my head was how our story would truly end. And most importantly, why I am letting him go. In books, you always have to let the one you love go. Otherwise, the story is not worth telling.
I have already been told by people that they can't wait to read what I write. My friends at home have been asking for autographed manuscripts when I'm done, haha. I will let them read it. It will be part of my healing process, to get the story out there. I don't know how it's all going to turn out yet, honestly.
But there is one thing I know for sure. I will be sure to print a copy for him. Because I need him to see it too. I need him to see why I have been acting the way I have been. I need him to see that a love like ours doesn't just disappear, like he has been trying to make it do. It stays around. My love for him is like a leaky faucet. For two years, the water could flow freely from it. But now, in the last several months, the faucet has been turned off, but the water is still dripping. Not as steadily as when the faucet was on, but it's most certainly still there. The lovely water is still escaping. One day, the faucet might get fixed, and the flow staunched. But not today. Not this semester. I need to leak in order to tell my story. And I can't wait for it to be told.
"Romeo, save me, they're trying to tell me how to feel. This love is difficult, but it's real. Don't be afraid, we'll make it out of this mess. It's a love story. Baby, just say yes."
--> Taylor Swift, "Love Story"
